A locum role from Limelight People offers many opportunities

Limelight People offers rewarding locum roles

With an extensive network of healthcare providers, Limelight People offers rewarding locum roles for nursing and allied health professionals. We can help connect you with an opportunity, and then support you so you can make the most of it.

In a locum role, you’ll fill in for a permanent staff member while they’re away for an extended period of time, usually 3 months or more, but some roles can be as short as 4 weeks. Roles can be personally and professionally rewarding, and can pay well too – hourly pay rates are often higher than for casual and permanent roles.

Nurses and allied health workers are some of the best placed professionals to take advantage of the opportunities that come with locum roles.

What opportunities does a locum role provide?

When you take on a locum role, you can:

Connect with a community

You’ll meet new people, make new friends and enjoy being part of a community.

Bring your expertise and leave an impression

You can make a difference by bringing much-needed skills and expertise.

Discover other opportunities

A locum role can lead to other opportunities, either with that provider or another in the Limelight network.

Refresh, reset and rebalance work and life

Taking on a locum role gives you a chance to refresh and reset your career. You might find it even helps you rebalance work and life.

Expand your horizons and explore Australia

Taking on a role in a rural and remote location can expand your literal and metaphorical horizons. You can explore unfamiliar landscapes, from picturesque coastal regions to breathtaking mountain ranges, and from busy cities to relaxed rural towns.

Limelight People can help you find the perfect role

Limelight has extensive experience in recruiting for locum roles in all health disciplines and specialities. We’ve already connected candidates with roles all over Australia – from the coast to the red centre and everywhere in between. Our candidates work in public and private health organisations. How do you apply for a locum role?

Start by connecting with Limelight People on LinkedIn and Facebook. To find out about the latest opportunities, review available roles on the Limelight website or join our mailing list. You can also contact us for advice.

Submit your resume

The roles we help fill are varied, but the application process is the same. Once you’ve identified a role you’re interested in, submit an up-to-date resume, including two or more current referees. Let us know how soon and for how long you’re available – minimum contracts are about 4–6 weeks but it’s more common that roles are for 3 or more months.

Provide your credentials

Provide evidence of your relevant qualifications, vaccinations (which may be specific to the region) and approvals (which may include separate police record and working with children checks for different states and territories).

Make the most of your call with a hiring manager

If you’re a good match for a role, we’ll coordinate your contact with the relevant manager and arrange a call. This is an important first step in building a working relationship. It’s also a great opportunity to ask questions. Definitely ask about the role, the team, and the workplace (uniform requirements and any equipment you may need to bring). Clarify the details of the contract, its length and whether that could change. Ask about the likely roster and any flexibility there is with it. But also ask more general questions about what to expect from life outside of work.

How to prepare for your first role

Once your role is confirmed, it’s time to prepare for your trip. There are some important questions to answer.

Are you going it alone or travelling with a partner or friend?

Travelling alone offers many advantages, including more freedom and flexibility – you get to make all of your own decisions. If you’re travelling with someone else, you might need to spend more time planning to make sure you’ve got everything you both need.

How are you travelling?

Are you driving yourself or taking a bus, train or plane? Driving lets you take more things with you and gives you more flexibility while you’re away. Either way, give yourself plenty of time. Make sure you know how long it will take to travel to your destination, especially if it’s in a remote location.

Where will you stay?

The most convenient accommodation is usually nurses’ quarters if they’re available as a part of the role. You can also look online for other options to suit your needs. Choices may be limited if you’ll be travelling with a pet.

How can I get oriented ahead of time?

From looking at Google Maps before you leave to taking a walk around the location when you arrive, the sooner you get oriented the better.

What should you do the night before you start?

Set an alarm. That way you can sleep easy knowing that you’ll be on time.

What can I expect from a locum role?

Expect to learn a lot. Your first day might feel a little like being the new kid at school. But you’ll settle in soon enough. Once you’ve learned who everyone is and their roles in the team, you’ll be more certain of your own role. And we’ll be here to help you make the most of it.

What you might not expect is that your first locum role is just the beginning of a new approach to work and life. We’ve found roles for many candidates who’ve since gone on to take on other locum roles, near and far – one couple is even using locum roles to support their trip around Australia in a van!
